Affordable tires have existed since the creation of cars. But recently, new brands showcasing cheap tires have begun to appear out of nowhere. 

Some of these ‘new’ brands are exploiting existing Chinese designs, and quite frankly, you don’t need to bother with them.

They might appear to be extremely attractive, but could be highly unsafe for driving, especially in extreme weather conditions. 

But then, there are reputable brands such as Kelly Edge, which proudly works under Goodyear’s authority, offers cheap yet durable tires, and is our topic of discussion for today’s review.

Overview of Kelly Edge Tires: The All Season Tires on a Budget

Goodyear is among the most widely recognized tire companies in the US. So obviously it would want to feature cheaper and budget-centered tires in its portfolio to further increase its customer base.

To meet this goal, Goodyear capitalizes on evolving other brands, one of which is Kelly Edge.

These tires are exclusively designed to be cheaper than the company’s standard tires; that’s the brief given to the engineers before they begin designing the tires using less advanced materials!

Theoretically speaking, the tires seem pretty good – they cost less than first-rate tires and have a tread pattern similar to what is already used for Goodyear tires. So overall, these tires should deliver a fine performance.

But practically speaking, does the Kelly Edge A/S deserve a chance, or is it just another low-budget, low-quality alternative?

Things to Consider Before Buying a Kelly Edge Tire

Kelly Edge A/S: Features & Benefits 

First off, let us just say that there is nothing extra special or outstanding about the Kelly Edge A/S. 

It’s a basic tire with a simple design featuring reasonably advanced technology. It reminds us of tires from more than ten years ago – but if you’re on a budget, all these features might not be such a bad thing!

Tread Pattern and Tread Life/Wear

Let’s start by discussing the tread pattern of the tires.

The Kelly Edge A/S tire is designed specifically to vacate slush and water from the surface. That being said, these tires should perform splendidly in rainy conditions. 

Also, the tires have biting tread block edges, which increase traction in snowy weather and should be useful for driving in winters. These sturdy tread blocks also guarantee stable handling at high speeds.

However, in terms of tread life, the Kelly Edge A/S wears quicker than top-quality tires. And their rubber compound doesn’t persist as long either. But given their low prices, that’s probably expected. 

Design

The design is pretty much standard for this category of tires – internal construction consisting of double steel belts and nylon strengthening for increased stability – so there’s nothing special there.

Noise and Comfort

When considering noise, the Kelly Edge A/S performs surprisingly well. 

The tires are extremely quiet during routine driving and also don’t make a lot of noise on the highway. Given their low price, this is extremely appealing. 

However, the same cannot be said about ride quality. The tires appear to bounce off the surface, transmitting unwanted vibrations into the vehicle’s cabin.

Grip and Traction

Considering grip and traction, the Kelly Edge A/S delivers reasonably well for routine driving. The tires are safe at standard speeds and don’t be afraid to speed up a little if you want to.

They’re also good and stable on the highway; however, the braking distances will be marginally longer than premium tires, but that’s not too bad.

Also, grip and traction on wet and snowy surfaces are not reliable, discussed in more detail in the next section.

Weather/Surface Conditions 

The Kelly Edge A/S isn’t by any means a sporty tire, but it is still quite competent on dry surfaces. 

But the tires quickly lose their magic on wet surfaces and, despite performing better than most cheap tires, do not remain reliable enough. The tires seem to lose traction in the corners sooner than their expensive counterparts.

Also, there is more wheel spin during hard acceleration, and stopping distances are longer as well.

In harsh wintry conditions, the Kelly Edge A/S isn’t the best choice at all. There is insufficient grip and traction on snowy roads, meaning unreliable handling and greater stopping distances. 

So even though Goodyear flaunts the Kelly Edge A/S as all-season tires, they only work well through spring, summer, and fall. For winters, they will work only where frequent snow or ice is absent. The tire simply doesn’t have enough tread pattern to offer good traction on slippery landscapes. 

Maintenance Indicators

Kelly Edge A/S tires use the industry-standard tread wear indicators (TWI’s), which help the driver assess how much tread depth is left on the tire.  

Warranty

Thankfully, the Kelly Edge A/S features an excellent warranty despite being such a cheap tire. 

Goodyear offers a 55,000-miles treadwear warranty to protect customers from premature wear. When compared to premium tires, that’s about 15,000-miles, but it is still good enough.

Tire uniformity is assured for six months or the first 2/3” of wear. Workmanship and materials are warranted for six years, and free replacement is provided during the first year of the purchase or for the first 2/32” of wear.
